Emily Dore
Hello! My name is Emily and I am a final year Sports Therapy student set to graduate this year.
Throughout my teenage years I was actively involved in a variety of sports, with a particular passion for athletics, tennis and netball. My interest in sports and musculoskeletal rehabilitation was sparked by my own journey through ACL reconstruction and meniscal repair. This personal experience deepened my appreciation for the role of physical therapy and highlighted the importance of effective rehabilitation in helping individuals return to optimal movement and performance.
During my placement year with AFC Bournemouth, I gained invaluable hands-on experience managing both acute and chronic injuries. This opportunity also enhanced my understanding of prehabilitation and its vital role in injury prevention and reducing re-injury risk. Combined with the academic knowledge I’ve gained throughout my degree, this experience has fuelled my excitement to begin my professional journey by supporting individuals in their recovery and helping them return to and maintain the activities they love!

Matereti Lagilagi
Matereti is a second year Physiotherapy student.
Matereti wants to be a Physiotherapist because he is passionate about helping people recover from injuries and regain their independence. His interest in Physiotherapy began through his love for sports where he saw first-hand how injuries can impact performance and overall well-being.
Playing sports made him appreciate the importance of movement, strength, and proper recovery, which sparked his curiosity in how the body heals and adapts.
Matereti was especially drawn to the role physiotherapists play in guiding athletes and patients back to full function through tailored rehabilitation programs. Over time, this interest expanded beyond sports - he became motivated to support a variety of patients, from post-operative individuals to those managing long-term conditions. He finds it deeply rewarding to be part of someone’s journey toward better health and mobility. Physiotherapy combines his interest in human movement with a strong desire to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives through compassionate, hands-on care.

Emma Smurthwaite
My name is Emma, and I am a third-year physiotherapy student due to qualify this summer. Prior to starting my degree I worked as a phlebotomist in a GP surgery. However it was my previous experience working in a hospital that first drew me to physiotherapy and seeing the difference physiotherapists made in supporting patients recovering from illness and injury. I really enjoy seeing people progress in their rehab journey and getting back to doing the things they love. In the future I would like to work in the community, with a focus on treating musculoskeletal conditions, combining this with an interest in frailty and chronic age-related conditions. In my spare time I enjoy walking my dog in the North Dorset countryside. I have also recently embarked on a large house renovation project with my husband.

What drew me to physiotherapy wasn’t just the idea of helping so many people but the fascination with how the human body works, adapts, and heals. My decision to pursue physiotherapy really started during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. While working in the hospital, I saw first-hand the physical toll the virus took on patients, hearing stories of individuals who couldn’t walk just a couple of months earlier but were now on their feet again thanks to physiotherapy. I’ve now had the chance to see just how powerful and life-changing this career can be whilst studying. Whether it’s helping someone walk again after a stroke or simply improving their day-to-day mobility, being a part of someone’s journey back to health is something I find extremely rewarding.
I love being outdoors and keeping active. Spending my spare time enjoying long walks along the coast or trying to conquer a bouldering wall. I also love spending time with my friends and family, and I’m always up for a bit of adventure - skydiving for charity was a recent highlight! Travelling is a big part of who I am, exploring different cultures, especially through food was a highlight when I was in the South of Thailand. I believe these life experiences have made me someone who is approachable, supportive and open-minded when helping people achieve their goals through health and wellbeing.

From a young age I have been passionate about sport and movement science. I have a BSc in Sports Performance and Coaching and an MSc in Performance Analysis of Sport and am currently studying for my Physiotherapy degree. Physiotherapy for me is about helping to guide people, through movement, back to their optimal functional level, from returning to sport to helping them regain the confidence to move, to become stronger. As a running coach, I learned the reward of helping people achieve their performance goals. As a runner, I have experienced the frustration and anguish of injury myself and as a rehabilitation assistant in the NHS, I discovered how rewarding it can be to help people regain the confidence to walk independently. My aim is develop a career centred around sports performance and rehabilitation from illness or injury, through the application of movement science and the promotion of physical activity.

Brad White
Bradley White is a second-year BSc physiotherapy student with a passion for musculoskeletal physiotherapy and sports rehabilitation, aspiring of a career helping athletes return and maintain their performance at a high level. Bradley is excited about working closely with university level athletes to enhance his hands on skills whilst helping them to recover, improve performance and prevent future injuries.
Bradley has developed fundamental knowledge on manual therapy, exercise prescription and assessment/ treatment techniques. This was aided by gaining relevant skills inside and outside of university by completing a sports taping course, clinical placements in outpatients’ settings and relevant units.
The reason Bradley chose to study physiotherapy is largely due to his love of A-level Physical Education, where he developed an interest in human movement and rehabilitation. Additionally, his personal experiences as a patient have given him a first-hand perspective into how beneficial physiotherapy can be and the effects it can have on an athlete’s motivation. For this reason, Bradley wants to give athletes the highest standard of physiotherapy care that he can.
Outside of Physiotherapy, Bradley excels in both university and local hockey teams, having competed at a high level. Additionally, he is a keen runner, having completed the Bournemouth Half Marathon last year in a time of 1hr 45minutes. His passion for sport extends outside of the classroom which provides a unique perspective for how he wishes to apply what he gains in his studies.
